Cooperative Education
The cooperative education work experience is powerful and dynamic, providing both technical and social learning opportunities. The purpose of the co-op is practical, "hands-on" experience in your field of study. Along with this work experience comes exposure to:
- current practice in your area of study,
- management organizations and structures,
- diverse equipment, machinery, people and geographical locations, and
- the social atmosphere and its surrounding community.
Highlights:
- Normally done during the summers between academic years (may opt to do year-long co-op with approval).
- Experience may also be an avenue for employment opportunities with the sponsor companies.
- Co-ops are graded with academic credits awarded, and are required for graduation. Twenty-five percent (25%)of the grade will come from employer's evaluation and 75% written project.
- Many of the sponsor companies are large, national and multinational companies. The primary concern of these companies is the training and evaluation of students in order to develop them as prospective future employees.
- Students in the USCG unlimited license programs may do a co-op following completion of the cruise.
- Note: All deck and engineering students who are preparing for the unlimited USCG license participate in a cooperative education program called Cadet Shipping.
