Suspicious Package Found at Maine Maritime Academy Secured by State Police; Residence Hall Declared Safe for Students

Castine, Maine—April 29, 2014—A suspicious package was found in the Curtis Hall dormitory on the Maine Maritime Academy campus late this afternoon. The object was found during the routine check-out of a room being vacated for the summer. Curtis Hall was evacuated and students were encouraged to go to the Alfond Student Center, the gym , or the library until notified of the building’s safety.

The State Police Department and Hancock County Sherriff's Office were called to campus to identify the package contents. They secured the package and as an extra precaution, they brought the K-9 Unit to sweep the area.

By 11:15 pm, the emergency response team had concluded that the building would be safe to be occupied. Students have been notified that it is now safe to re-enter the dorm.

The matter is still under investigation.
