CASTINE, Maine – January 23, 2013 - Maine Maritime Academy is pleased to announce the following students have been recognized for the top sea projects during their cadet shipping in 2012:

Deck:
Christopher Morgan AND Andrea-Leigh West (tie for #1), Maxwell Fleischfresser, Bennett Higgins, Oliver Jennings, Samuel McIntire, Charles Spear.

Engine:
Brendan Scully (#1), Jay Baker, Gavin Cote, Anthony Dell'Aquila, Angela Fouquette, Philep Levesque, Mark Little, Cameron Murphy, Ryan Ramsay, William Silver, Evan Sinclair, Ethan Stubbs, Devin Withee.

Cadet shipping is a requirement for students who are seeking their unlimited United States Coast Guard license and takes place during the summer between their sophomore and junior years at the academy. The sea project consists of a series of questions which are designed to be answered in essay format by the student while they are at sea. The student must also use data from their work on the vessel to back up their answer.

“As a whole, this class had terrific ship officers’ evaluations and the students did very well serving as MMA Ambassadors on board their respective vessels,” said Amy Gutow, Administrative Assistant for Career Services. “They should be proud of their work.”

The top cadet from both the deck and engine programs receives a check for $250 in addition to a congratulatory letter and ribbon to wear on their uniform. The other awardees receive a congratulatory letter and ribbon. The sea projects are graded by the deck and engine training chairs.

“I think that all of us would agree that this class did very well and the competition was stiff,” said Nate Gandy, Commandant of Midshipman. “The fact that the deck department had a tie for first place is indicative of the high quality.”
