STATEMENT OF THE JOB
Employee is responsible for the Academy training vessel engine department, including operation, maintenance, safety, and cleanliness of all pertinent engineering systems and spaces. Employee must possess a current U. S. Coast Guard Chief Engineer license (unlimited H.P., motor) with a minimum of 5 years recent experience sailing in capacity of Chief Engineer and at least a Bachelor's degree in an Engineering field. Employee may provide input for budget and report preparation. Employee has a high degree of public contact representing the Academy and teaching is required.
DUTIES OF THE JOB
1. Reports to the Port captain and Ship’s Master concerning areas of responsibility.
2. Teach a minimum of 6 credits each semester and participate on relevant faculty and Academy committees as assigned by the Engineering Department, Chair and Provost.
3. Coordinates all training vessel engine department assignments, leaves and working schedules.
4. Responsible for implementation and administration of planned maintenance system for the training vessel.
5. Responsible for material and supply requirements for the training vessel engine department.
6. Liaisons with applicable regulatory bodies for periodic inspections and surveys.
7. Prepares work order requests, and repair specifications for shipyard and contract work.
8. Responsible as Academy representative to MARAD regarding training vessel engineering.
9. Prepares all required reports, logs, special orders.
10. Responsible for cadet engine training as coordinated with the Engineering Department training officer.
11. Responsible for implementing the Environmental Health and Safety policy of the Academy.
12. Position includes annual training cruise and other sea duty including shipyard periods away from Castine.
13. On call while the ship is in port.
14. Supervises student and regular Academy employees.
