STATEMENT OF THE JOB
Employee reports to the Master. Employee is assigned duties, work schedules, and long term projects through consultation with the vessel’s Master and Chief Mate.
* Employee must possess at least a valid U.S.C.G. Second Mates License, Oceans, Unlimited.
* Employee must possess valid U.S.C.G. Radar Endorsement.
* Employee must possess valid U.S.C.G. "STCW''' document.
* Small vessel operations, tugs, barges, and varied marine related experience will also be factored.
DUTIES OF THE JOB
1. Performs all duties normally associated with a Second Mate's position.
2. Responsible for the operations and maintenance of the T. S. State of Maine bridge and navigational gear.
3. Responsible for liaison with MARAD regarding government orders relating to vessel charts, publications, certifications and repair items.
4. Is part of the team training students and vessel personnel in fire fighting, damage control, rescue, and evacuations.
5. Responsible for cruise voyage planning liaison with the Master and Academy administrators.
6. Operates equipment and conducts validations, develops work orders and processes findings into the system.
7. Responsible for ordering bridge and navigational supplies.
8. Responsible for inputs to budgetary and shipboard reports.
9. Teaches classes in the department of Marine Transportation and conducts relevant labs.
10. Shares vessel security watches and bridge watches with other vessel and deployed personnel.
11. Liaison with ABS, U.S.C.G. and other regulatory bodies, relative to inspections and certifications.
12. Responsible for bridge repair orders and work lists as well as shipyard planning.
13. Responsible for voyage reports, logs and all relevant navigational records.
14. Responsible for compliance with academy rules, regulations and safety policy as they relate to the position.
15. Acts as a working supervisory example to, and with, students and or other Academy personnel as assigned.
16. Is assigned to the vessel and as such participates in all deployments.
17.Employee is required to adhere to and to enforce the dress code and conduct as outlined in the Regimental Manual.
