STATEMENT OF THE JOB
Employee reports to the Senior Deck Officer or his designated subordinate. Employee is the senior unlicensed deck person. Duties are assigned, and jobs are scheduled, through consultation with the vessel's senior officers, namely the Master and Chief Engineer. Employee must possess U.S.C.G. certification as "lifeboatman", current Fire Fighting certificate, and possess unlimited U.S.C.G. Able Seaman document. Leadership and working knowledge of computers and software as well as familiarization with process controls, systems, and electrical interfacing desirable.
DUTIES OF THE JOB
1. Responsible for deck department stores, spares and equipage to be requisitioned.
2. Responsible for identifying needed repairs, overseeing the repairs and testing of completed repairs.
3. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the vessel's deck gear.
4. Assists with the operation and maintenance of all vessel machinery on an as needed basis.
5. Responsible for the operation, maintenance, testing and instruction in use of the vessel's fire fighting and lifesaving equipment.
6. Responsible for the maintenance of the vessel's coating systems and cleanliness of the vessel in general.
7. Responsible for maintenance of, and instruction in, all aspects of marlinespike seamanship.
8. Responsible for compliance with Academy rules, regulations and safety policy as they relate to the position as Boatswain.
9. Acts as a working supervisor/leader of students and/or other Academy personnel as assigned.
10.Assists the vessel's officers in the development, training and execution of all emergency drills and procedures.
11.Is assigned to the vessel and as such participates in all deployments.
12.Employee is required to adhere to the dress code and conduct of the Academy Regiment.
13.May supervise MMA regular and/or student employees.
