STATEMENT OF THE JOB

Employee reports to the Senior Deck Officer or his designated subordinate.  Duties and jobs are assigned through consultation with the Chief Mate and/or Master.

·                     Employee must possess U.S.C.G. certification Able Bodied (AB) Seaman.

·                     Employee must have significant at sea experience in all aspects of deck seamanship and maintenance.

·                     Prior military service is desirable.

·                     Positions of leadership in the deck department will be weighted accordingly.

 

DUTIES OF THE JOB

1.                  Responsible for using and maintaining deck department stores, spares and

equipage.

2.                  Responsible for identifying and reporting needed repairs, accomplishing the

repairs and testing the repairs as directed.

3.                  Responsible for the operation and maintenance of all vessels deck gear.

4.                  Responsible for the operation and maintenance of all ship’s boats.

5.                  Responsible for the operation, maintenance, testing and instruction in use of the vessels fire fighting and lifesaving equipment.

6.                  Responsible for the maintenance of the vessel’s coating systems and cleanliness of the vessel in general.

7.                  Responsible for the maintenance and, as directed, the instruction of all aspects of marlinespike seamanship.

8.                  Acts as a working supervisor/leader of students and/or other Academy personnel as assigned.

9.                  Responsible for compliance with Academy rules, regulations and safety policy as they relate to the position of AB.

10.              Assists the ship’s officers in the development, training and execution of all emergency drills and procedures.

11.              Is assigned to the vessel and as such participates in all deployments.

12.              As a uniformed employee, is required to comply with the regimental uniform regulations as modified by the Commandant for staff officers.

13.              Is expected to enforce regimental regulations.

14.              May supervise MMA regular and/or student employees.
