CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) Continuing Education will offer a new 40-hour intensive course in July—Fundamentals of Geographic Information Science (GIS)—for working professionals and those seeking to increase their technical knowledge of GIS.
The course will meet Monday through Friday, July 22 - 26 from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the Computer Aided Design (CAD) Lab in Dismukes Hall, Room 209, on Maine Maritime Academy's Castine campus. Instructor Betsy Reese is adjunct professor of GIS and Geography at MMA.
Lecture topics will include an introduction and history of GIS, spatial data and data sources, GIS tools, and topics in cartography. Lab exercises will cover spatial data display and query, simple spatial analysis, and map generation. In addition to basic concepts and functions of GIS, students will design and complete a simple GIS project in a specific area of interest.
Prerequisites for the course include basic knowledge and working experience with Microsoft Excel, personal computers, and internet search. The course includes classroom lecture but will focus mainly on working in the ESRI ArcGIS software. The software “allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts,” according to ESRI.
Cost for the course is $500 plus a required text to be purchased in advance: Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop 10.0, ESRI Press Paperback, ISBN: 9781589482609. For more information, visit http://conted.mainemaritime.edu/fundGIS.html
