CASTINE, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy and Mariner Athletics are proud to announce the selection of Steve Tardif (Class of 2000) and women’s basketball teammates Alyssa Burns (Class of 2007), Michelle “Shelley” Gott (Class of 2007), and Julia Knights (Class of 2007) for 2012 induction into the William J. Mottola Mariner Athletics Hall of Fame.
Tardif, a graduate of Biddeford High School, still holds 14 Mariner football records including most career rushing yards with 6,099, most rushing yards in a game with 352, and most career all-purpose yards with 7,968. He also had five 200 yards rushing in a single season. Among his many honors he was a two-time Hewlett-Packard All American and a four time first team All-New England Football Conference selection.
In the three years Burns, Gott, and Knights played together the team compiled a 72-15 record, were ranked as high as 15th nationally in NCAA Division III, they hold or are tied for 40 individual school records, and made three trips to the NCAA tournament.
In her three years with the Mariners Burns was named North Atlantic Conference (NAC) “Player of the Year” three times, NAC 1st team three times, MWBCA 2nd team All State twice, MWBCA 1st team All State once, and as a WBCA Honorable Mention All American her senior year.
She stills holds ten Mariner records.
Gott is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,600 points and holds most of the Mariners three-point records. She was named to NAC 1st team three times, NAC 2nd team once, NAC All-Tournament three times, and NAC Tournament MVP once. She still holds 16 records.
Knights is the only Mariner to have scored over 1,000 points and have over 1,000 rebounds. NAC co-“Player of the Year” her freshman season, she was a NAC 1st team selection three times, NAC 2nd team once, twice MWBCA 2nd team All State, and a four time member of the NAC All-Tournament team. She was also a two time NAC All-Academic selection.
The 2012 induction ceremony will be held during Homecoming festivities on Saturday, September 29 at 10:30 a.m. in Delano Auditorium on the MMA campus. The William J. Mottola Mariner Athletics Hall of Fame is located in the lower level of Smith Gym. All are invited to attend.
