Maine Maritime Academy’s Accessibility Services office, located in the Center for Student Success, provides support services to students with learning disabilities. Accommodations can help enable academic success and personal growth in college programs at MMA.

The Accessibility Services This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. considers requests for accommodation from students with learning disabilities. To receive accommodation you must meet with the coordinator and:

  1. Document your learning disability with Accessibility Services by providing a recent report from a qualified specialist that establishes the nature of the disability, the basis for the diagnosis, and the dates of testing.
  2. Provide a recommendation from a qualified specialist of the specific accommodation that will offset the effects of the disability. A recent IEP, 504 plan, or Summary of Performance may contain this information.
  3. Sign a release form. The form allows the Academy to notify personnel, on an as-needed Basis, to assist in making appropriate accommodation. By law, only those with a “need to know” may see documentation; an instructor may need to know the accommodation but does not need to see the documentation.

The Academy may conduct independent review of the records submitted and request you to submit to an independent medical examination. Accessibility Services will approve specific accommodations in the form of an accommodation letter. Students elect (or not) to disclose the disability to your instructor(s) and use the accommodation.
