Loan Counseling

To insure that borrowers understand their rights and obligations, federal loan programs require that students take part in entrance and exit counseling. You must complete an entrance counseling form before funds can be certified by MMA.

Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling

For entering students:
First time borrowers at Maine Maritime Academy are required to complete student loan entrance counseling before receiving loan proceeds. The purpose of the entrance counseling is to provide the student with important information regarding their rights and responsibilities as a student loan borrower. An entrance counseling form must be completed at www.studentloans.gov before funds can be certified by MMA.

Stafford Loan Exit Counseling

For students who are leaving or graduating from Maine Maritime Academy:
Students who have borrowed Federal Stafford Loans while attending MMA must complete exit counseling prior to leaving the Academy. The purpose of exit counseling is to provide the student with important information regarding loan repayment, including deferments, grace periods, loan consolidation, and loan default. Exit counseling sessions are scheduled at the end of each semester.

Graduate PLUS Loan Entrance Counseling

Graduate PLUS Loan borrowers are required to complete entrance counseling before receiving loan proceeds. An entrance counseling form must be completed at www.studentloans.gov before funds can be certified by MMA.

Perkins Loan Entrance Counseling

For entering students:
First time borrowers of the Federal Perkins loan are required to complete student loan entrance counseling before receiving their loan proceeds. The purpose of entrance counseling is to provide the student with important information regarding their rights and responsibilities as a student loan borrower.

Perkins Loan Exit Counseling

For students who are leaving or graduating from Maine Maritime Academy: Students who have borrowed Federal Perkins loans while attending MMA must complete student loan exit counseling prior to leaving the University. The purpose of exit counseling is to provide the student with important information regarding loan repayment, including deferments, grace periods, loan cancellation, and loan default.

U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Loan Ombudsman

The Ombudsman works informally to help borrowers resolve loan disputes and problems. The Ombudsman Customer Service Line is 1-877-557-2575. The Ombudsman assists borrowers with federal loans, including: Federal Perkins Loans, Federal Stafford Loans, Federal PLUS Loans, Guaranteed Student loans, Supplemental Loans to Students (SLS), and Federal Consolidation Loans.

Student Loan History

You can monitor your student loan history by going to www.nslds.ed.gov. Students must obtain a PIN number in order to access this web site. PIN numbers can be obtained by the following methods: ●You may request a PIN be mailed to them by registering at NSLDS. ●You may apply for a PIN online at www.pin.ed.gov.
